Matthew James Shermak, age 12, and a resident of Pinckney and formerly Whitmore Lake, passed away in a tragic ATV accident in Rumely, Michigan on August 2, 2009. Born in Ann Arbor on August 23, 1996, Matthew is the beloved son of Cynthia and James Shermak of Pinckney and brother of Amanda Elizabeth. An Honor Roll Student, he just finished the 7th Grade at Whitmore Lake Middle School. Active in Baseball and Boy Scouts, Matthew loved camping all over Michigan, campfires with s'mores and playing in the out of doors, he loved the beach and traveling with his family to Cape Cod and Florida. He loved riding ATV's, dirt bikes and fishing with his father and was always by his side. He adored his little sister and was an awesome big brother. He loved going to the Nascar races, Monster Jams, and Tiger's baseball games. He loved going 4-wheeling up north with his father, uncles and cousins. Matthew and Melanie were not only cousins but the best of friends they loved feeding the horses together, they were joined at the hip if you wanted to find one you just had to look for the other. He loved texting his cousins Anna, Stephanie and Rosey who live in Virginia. He was very proud of his Uncle Jeff a Culinary Officer First Class in the Navy and was looking forward to his trip east to see the commissioning of the USS New York LPD-21-- a ship built from the ruins of the World Trade Center Towers. He played Little League Baseball -- third base was his favorite -- and loved helping his grandfather prepare for their annual garage sale in Brighton and searching for golfballs with his grandmother who lives on a golf course. He enjoyed working construction with his father, earning and saving money for a canoe and new dirt bike. A gifted artist who could draw anything from sight, he grew up working craft shows with his mother where he sold his own tic-tack-toe boards and was enthralled by all the new technologies, playing video games with his cousin Jon for hours on end. In short, Matthew Shermak was a happy and very gifted boy -- a beloved son, a loving brother, ready friend and good companion, known for his smile and enthusiasm and love of life-- his untimely death is a heartbreak to his large and loving family.
In addition to his parents and sister, Matthew is the grandson of Gary and the late Donna Gleich, Jean and the late Ralph Shermak, and great grandson of Mary Gleich; nephew of Carolyn (Bob) Kakaley, Sandra (Kurt) Graham, Michael (Stephanie) Gleich, Joe Shermak, Jeff (Catita) Shermak, USN; also surviving are his cousins, Lisa and Vinnie Moreno, Vinnie Moreno III, Kurtis and Katie Graham, Melanie Marie, Derek, and Adalyn Graham, Jennifer and David Kakaley, Rene (Bobby Britton) Graham, Jon Gleich, Melanie Rose Graham, Anna, Stephanie and Rosey Shermak, many great aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends and classmates from Whitmore Lake Middle School who join with his family in mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
